On This Date in TWISTED-HISTORY.com! in 1943, the US government announced that shoe rationing would go into effect on February 9, 1943. Each man, woman, and child was limited to the purchase of three pairs leather shoes a year, and no exemptions were made for growing feet or fashion. So what happened because of this? A lucrative black market appeared and flourished for the two and a half years the rationing was in effect.
