On This Date in TWISTED-HISTORY.com! in 1919 a 30 foot wall of molasses washed through Boston and killed 21 people. Really, a 30 foot wall of molasses washed through Boston and drowned 21 people. Apparently, there are a lot of things and people slower than a 30 foot wall of molasses in January. The Great Boston Molasses Tragedy occurred when a 50 foot tall round storage tank that was 90 feet in diameter collapsed and it released 2,300,000 gallons of molasses onto the street. It was calculated that the 30 foot tall wave rushed outwards at 35 miles and hour and drowned or crushed 21 people and injured 150 others. The people of Boston have ever since them preferred maple syrup on their pancakes.
