December 7, 1925

On This Date in TWISTED-HISTORY.com! in 1925, Swimmer Johnny Weissmuller set a world record in the 150-yard freestyle with a time of 1 minute, 25 and 2/5 seconds. One of the sports announcers broadcasting the event remarked that he might be able to swim even faster if he had some ‘real’ incentive, like a crocodile chasing him. Mr. Weissmuller subsequently went on to play “Tarzan” in several movies and swung on vines from tree to tree and had several scenes where he was shown out-swimming American alligators dolled up to look like African crocodiles.
