November 11, 1974

On This Date in TWISTED-HISTORY.com! in 1974 Samuel Ting of MIT and Burton Richter of the Brookhaven National Laboratory announced in separate news conferences the discovery of the J/Psi meson, a heretofore undiscovered subatomic particle. Ting and Richter decided to forego the traditional knife-fight dance-off, ala Jets vs Sharks, and agreed to share this discovery and they were subsequently both awarded the 1976 Nobel Peace Prize in Physics. MIT to this day claims that if a dance-off had happened, they would have been the Jets and Brookhaven would have been regulated to the less desirable Sharks. The physicists at Brookhaven sent MIT a one word missive in response. All it said was “nerds”.
