October 31, 1815

On This Date in TWISTED-HISTORY.com! in 1815 Sir Humprey Davy of London patented the miner’s safety lamp. His subsequent invention of the miner’s canary hat proved less useful. The miners complained that the canary cage section of the helmet stuck too far above their head and would strike the ceiling of the tunnel and that the leather strap that kept the helmet attached to their heads rubbed sores on their chins and jaws. They also complained that the damn birds wouldn’t shut the hell up, and that was quite irritating to a man who was trying to swing a pickax in a small enclosed space.
