On This Date in TWISTED-HISTORY.com in 1991 Carlos Santana pleaded no contest to a marijuana possession charge in Texas. He was at first adamant that he wanted to have a trial by his peers, but when he was informed by his attorney that pot smoking would not be allowed in the courtroom and that the jury would be comprised of Texans, he quickly changed his mind and accepted the prosecutor’s deal. Being Mexican/American and in Texas, he was certain he might get the death penalty for his marijuana possession if it went to trial. When both his attorney and the prosecutor adamantly swore that there was no death penalty for pot possession in Texas, he still wouldn’t believe them.
