August 3, 1750

On This Date in TWISTED-HISTORY.com in 1750, Christopher Dock completed the very first book of teaching methods. It was titled “A Simple and Thoroughly Prepared School Management.” In it, Mr. Dock explained how repetition, bible study, prayer, public shaming, paying children to learn, and thorough beatings were required to educate children so that they would become useful members of society and help them reach their educational potential. He was considered very radical at the time, as he stated that he believed even the children of poor parents deserved the opportunity to learn.

About Joel Byers

Born in North Georgia and educated at some very fine public institutions. Real education started after graduating from college and then getting married and raising two boys. Has the ability to see the funny and absurd in most things and will always remark on it, even if it means getting the stink-eye from his victims.

  1. T. D. Millionaire says:

I am torn. While I applaud his methods (shaming is sadly underused in our current public education system), I’m not quite sure I see the point in educating the poor. They certainly don’t need to know how to read and write in order to work for minimum wage in one of my factories for the rest of their short, meaningless lives.

I say we simply move the shaming to the workplace, and do away with all of this public education nonsense, once and for all.

    Yours Sincerely,
    T. D. Millionaire, Esq.
